Reading at a glance

Reading, located in the South East of England, is one of the largest settlements in the UK that doesn’t possess city status.

Despite being in the capital’s orbit, this Berkshire town is still an economic powerbase in its own right.

Reading was built on the booming cloth trade and the famous '3Bs' of Biscuits, Beer and Bulbs. These traditional businesses have been replaced by the insurance, Information Technology, finance, legal, green technologies and biopharma sectors.

However, despite 21st century industrialisation, Reading still maintains its history and beauty. The town sits at the heart of an attractive area of the Thames Valley amid green rolling hills, thatched cottages and pubs sitting across the confluence of the Thames and Kennet rivers.

Mingling with more modern buildings are the ruins of Reading Abbey (founded by Henry I in 1121) on the southeast boundary of Forbury Gardens.

The town is also home to the famous Reading Festival that takes place over the August bank holiday weekend. The 30-year-old pop music festival is the oldest of its kind in the world and usually attracts some of the biggest names in contemporary music.

If you choose to study and live in Reading you won’t have any difficulties with moving around. Sitting at the junction of several major transport routes the town serves as a major hub for commuter traffic (rail and road) in and out of London, which is just 20 minutes away.

Clubbing

Enjoy live sports, the Australian inspired drinks menu and décor of Walkabout or the show-stopping cocktails, champagnes, and rums of the Pacific Island-inspired Lola Lo.

The iconic Purple Turtle with its quirky, artistic and unique design hosts live music and karaoke and has a dark, dungeon-like basement thumping with Reading’s best DJ crews, Reggae, Drum N Bass, Electro and Metal sound.

There are also live music nights at the Oakford Social Club.

Frequently asked questions about student housing in Reading

How do I apply for private student accommodation in Reading?

After choosing your favourite property, click on ‘View Rooms’. You’ll then need to choose what type of room you like to live in. After you’ve chosen your favourite property and room type and now the dates you’ll be living there, click ‘Book Now’.

If you’re not quite ready to book yet, just click ‘Enquire’ next to the ‘Book Now’ button. One of our booking consultants will be in touch with you shortly to answer any questions you might have. You can always also call us or message us on live chat if you have any questions.

Can you arrange a viewing for me?

Absolutely! If you’ll be in Reading before your move-in date and would like to see the property first before committing, contact us as soon as possible and one of our booking consultants can arrange viewings for you.

What are the different room types you offer?

We offer three different types of rooms for accommodation in Reading.

The first option is a Shared Room, where you share a bedroom with at least one other person as well as other facilities with other tenants from other rooms.

The second option is a Private Room, where you’ll get your own bedroom (and in some properties a private bathroom) but share other facilities with tenants from other rooms.

The third option is booking an Entire Place, where you’ll get an entire studio for yourself. With this option, you won’t have to share anything, so you’ll have your very own bedroom, bathroom and a kitchenette for cooking your meals.

What bills are included in the rent?

This depends on the property you choose. In most cases, you’ll only have to pay the rent and nothing else as bills are included in the total cost of most of our student residences. However, it’s best to check and see if this is the case with the property you choose.

How do I pay my rent?

Once you’ve signed the contract and finalised the booking with one of our booking consultants, we’ll provide you all the needed payment details.

You’ll pay the rent directly to the landlord either by bank transfer or with a credit or debit card and won’t have to pay anything to Student.com.
