Stoke-on-Trent

From haunted potteries to monkey forests, historic buildings to cool bars and clubs, there’s plenty to do in Stoke-on-Trent

The historic home of the pottery trade, Stoke-on-Trent is more than just kilns and prettily painted plates - though the fascinating museums dedicated to the town’s former boom industry are always worth a visit. These days, Stoke is packed with bars, restaurants, pubs, celebrated buildings and parks, that you can fill your days wandering through.

To get a feel of what makes the world capital of the ceramic trade so interesting, visit The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in the centre of town, or check out the remarkable Victorian-brick bottle ovens of the Gladstone Pottery Museum, where there’s been rumours of ghostly activity.

Have a lazy picnic in Hanley Park and stroll around the pretty lake with its own boathouse. Stop by the beautiful Stoke Minster church, where one of pottery’s founding fathers, Josiah Wedgwood, is buried. Watch a contemporary dance production at the Mitchell Arts Centre before refreshing with a tea and cake in the Spitfire Café. Check out a show at the lovely art-deco Regent Theatre. Then, when night falls, hit the dancefloor at fun hangout, The Terrace, or head to The Sugarmill for live music ranging from 80s electro pop to soulful indie tunes.

If you’re itching for some high-octane adventure, head out of town for a brilliant day away from the city. Adrenaline junkies can hang from the trees at Aerial Extreme Adventure Experiences while nature lovers can watch free-roaming primates playing at Trentham Monkey Forest.
