History of Sheffield Hallam University

Sheffield Hallam University can trace its roots back to 1843 when the Sheffield School of Design was founded. The institution was so small that lessons were given in the Bath Saloon, a rented room above the baths on Glossop Road.

With 132 students enrolled, Sheffield City Training College officially opened at Collegiate Campus in 1905, welcoming students from both genders. A year later, the institution’s sporting tradition was born. A forerunner to today’s Varsity tournament, the first sports day at Sheffield City Training College was staged. In 1966 it was renamed the Sheffield City College of Education.

In 1969, Sheffield Polytechnic opened offering courses in design, science, and building. In 1976, it merged with the Sheffield City College of Education and the Totley-Thornbridge College of Education. The word ‘city’ was added to Sheffield Polytechnic after merging with Lady Mabel College of Physical Education a year later.

In 1985, the institution, now one of the largest providers of nursing and midwifery education in the UK, began training the next generation of nurses.

Sheffield City Polytechnic became Sheffield Hallam University in 1992 when it gained university status and thus the authority to award its own degrees.

In February 1994, the Queen officially opened the award-winning atrium at City Campus. At a cost of £27m, it was at the time the largest ever construction project in higher education.

Frequently asked questions about student accommodation near Sheffield Hallam University

How do I book student accommodation Student.com?

Booking accommodation on our website is easy. After finding a student property you like, go to the property page by clicking ‘View rooms’. On the property page, you’ll need to choose your preferred room type and the dates when you’ll want to live there.

After this, simply click ‘Enquire’ or ‘Book now’ and leave your contact details. One of our booking consultants will soon contact you to answer any question you may have and talk you through the next steps in the booking process.

Why should I choose to live in a private room rather than university halls?

There are many good sides to choosing private student accommodation over student halls. Many purpose-built student accommodations (PBSAs) are very modern and comfortable, with excellent amenities like games rooms, in-house gyms and in-house cinema rooms available for the inhabitants to use.

You can also freely choose where in Sheffield you’ll want to live, whether you prefer to live right next to your campus, in the city centre or some other part of the city.

Another thing you get to choose freely with private accommodation is your room type. You can still choose to share with a flatmate, but you can also live in a fully self-contained studio property where you can have your own peace and quiet and won’t have to share with anyone.

What are the different types of rooms you offer?

We currently offer three different types of rooms:

Shared Rooms: Two or more people share a bedroom. Other living areas are shared with occupants of other rooms.

Private Rooms: You get your own private bedroom, and in some properties, also a private bathroom. Other facilities are shared with tenants from other rooms.

Entire Place: A fully self-contained studio property with a private bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette. Here you won’t have to share anything with other students.

Do you list accommodation in the city centre of Sheffield?

Yes, we list several properties in the city centre. These are also right next to the Sheffield Hallam University city campus.

Are bills included in the rent?

In almost all of the properties we list in Sheffield, all bills are included in the rent. However, some landlords may have different policies about bills, so check on the property to make sure that this is the case with the property you’re interested in.

Most properties also include free Wi-Fi in the rent, so you’ll typically get high-speed internet as well.

Are the rooms you list fully furnished?

Yes, most of the student properties we list in Sheffield are fully furnished. Again, check the property page to make sure if this is the case with the property you’re thinking about booking though, as some landlords might make an exception and expect you to get your own furniture.
