Get to know Nottingham

Known for men in tights and an angry sheriff, the county town of Nottinghamshire is much more than the Robin Hood legend. Dubbed ‘The Queen of the Midlands’ during the early 20th century, it’s an historic but dynamic county capital with big-city aspirations.

Rich history

Beneath its modern charm, Nottingham has a rich history of rebellion, invention and industry. This East Midlands town is loaded with evocative historical sights. From museums and galleries to Nottingham Castle and the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, which claims to be the oldest pub in England, there are several remarkable symbols of the town’s rich history and culture waiting to be discovered.

For £12, students will be rewarded with a history lesson, beautiful grounds and a panoramic view of the city on a tour of Nottingham Castle, which was home to the sheriff in the Robin Hood films. The famous statue of Robin Hood remains an iconic spot for a photograph.

You can also stroll around the stunning deer park and admire the Wollaton Hall, which was featured in the 2011 Batman film The Dark Knight Rises. Nottingham’s Natural History collection is also housed inside the hall. Next door in the stables, Nottingham Industrial Museum showcases the impressive industries which Nottingham was once famous for.
