Ipswich

Wander through streets lined with ancient buildings dating back more than 500 years on your way to the modern waterfront

“The most pleasant place in all England” is how author Daniel Defoe described Ipswich, the historic county town of Suffolk. Following a day of lectures, explore the quaint timber-framed shops, such as the incredible 15th century Ancient House with its detailed decorative frontage. Or just unwind by listening to the water lap at the banks of the River Orwell.

Grab a seat outside at former salt warehouse Bistro on the Quay and tuck into some seasonal produce as you look out over the moored yachts. No mind if there's no free tables, there's plenty of other options on the waterfront.

As a resident, you don’t need to check into boutique waterside hotel The Salthouse. You should definitely head there for refreshments, though, if only to drink in the view and amazing decor that includes gold suits of armour alongside eye-popping modern design.

Just a ten minute stroll from the marina brings you to the town centre, where you will find yourself checking the schedules at the Ipswich Corn Exchange. It plays host to the world’s biggest bands, but also houses two cinema screens showing arthouse and world cinema.

Or you can simply stroll through one of Ipswich's leafy public parks with woodland, ponds and natural streams, including the 70-acre Christchurch Park. This is home to the Tudor Christchurch Mansion, with the largest collection of Constable and Gainsborough works outside of London.

Although UCS is only minutes from most student accommodation, the free shuttle bus is the perfect option after a long day at uni.
