Get to know Canterbury

Canterbury is a historic town in the administrative county of Kent, South East England.

It is the birthplace of Christopher Marlowe, the murder site of medieval archbishop Thomas Becket, home to the Archbishop of Canterbury (the principal leader of the Church of England) and has a historic cathedral that has been a primary symbol of ecclesiastical England since the early 7th century.

It is also the setting for Chaucer’s classic collection of short stories, the Canterbury Tales. Canterbury’s picturesque, cobbled streets, medieval buildings and beautiful surroundings were a major inspiration for ‘The Canterbury Tales’ and also some of Charles Dickens’s best literature.

A town full of history

That medieval settlement feel, bars, restaurants, attractions and a truly exquisite graduation site (the cathedral) are just a few reasons for Canterbury’s popularity as a tourist destination and a student haven.

And it is easy to see why.

Enclosed by an ancient Roman wall, Canterbury’s mix of rich history, ancient buildings, plenty of independent coffee houses and tea rooms, and a lively nightlife, makes it a fascinating place to live and study.

With a compact centre of half-timbered buildings, a cobbled high street, a castle and one of the UK’s most famous cathedrals, the city is full of spectacular landmarks to explore.

You can sate your cultural appetite with a visit to the incredible cathedral, or check out the spectacular historical sites of St Augustine’s Abbey and St Martin’s Church, which together with the cathedral form the city’s UNESCO World Heritage site. Then head to see the ruins of the huge 11th-Century Norman castle and stroll along the ancient Roman city wall.

Get a taste of Canterbury’s rich literary past with the award-winning Canterbury Tales attraction, where the sights, sounds and smells of Chaucer’s medieval England are recreated.

Out in nature

If you appreciate nature and the outdoors, the surrounding countryside offers plenty of opportunities to explore some of Britain’s natural beauty.

The beautiful gardens surrounding the River Stour are great places to relax or study. Howletts Wild Animal Park offers 90 acres of beautiful parkland where you can see exotic and endangered species.

There are several parks and gardens such as Dane John Gardens, Westgate Gardens, Kingsmead Playing Field and Solly’s Orchard to enjoy during a break away from studies.

The river tours on the River Stour are something to tick off your Canterbury student experience list as well. They are one of the biggest tourist attractions in Canterbury and it’s a great way to experience the beautiful city’s surroundings and history.

Getting around

Although nowhere is too far in Canterbury’s city centre to cycle to, shuttle buses make it a piece of cake to get around town. When you want to explore further, a high-speed train can take you to London in under an hour.

Student life in Canterbury

You might wonder how a small historic town can cater for students, but you’ll be surprised how well-equipped Canterbury is for a great student experience.

Despite its small size, Canterbury is one of the most attractive student cities in the UK for domestic and international students alike.

Cheerful nightlife

Around 31,000 of Canterbury’s 55,000 total population are students. This means Canterbury has the highest student/permanent resident ratio in the UK, so you will never have to search far for a great night out.

Canterbury’s cheerful nightlife is littered with clubs, bars and events for a variety of occasions. Due to Canterbury’s ‘old city’ aura, there are quirky pubs all over the city. But there are also several modern hip spots such as the very popular Club Chemistry which has three floors playing music from dance to RnB and hip hop.

For themed nights check out Tokyo Tea Rooms where you can choose from Glitterbomb to LGBT+ nights with drag and dancers or go for the rock/emo night called FaceDown which is organised once a month.

For a more sociable setting, there are plenty of pubs and bars to choose from. Very popular amongst students is The Penny Theatre, a friendly venue offering delicious food, great drinks, exciting quiz nights and all-around unforgettable fun experiences at good prices.

Students also like to flock to The Ballroom or Alberrys, a special bar with live music and comedy that often hosts events for university societies.

The Cherry Tree has its own secret recipe cocktail, and Lady Luck, Canterbury’s rock-and-roll bar, is known as one of the best pubs for alternative music.

If you don’t feel like venturing into the city centre, the University of Kent offers a range of restaurants and cafes on campus while Canterbury Christ Church University’s The Lounge is a new hot-spot for students.

Festivals

Canterbury’s calendar of annual festivals from Pride in June to the Canterbury Festival in October-November is a great opportunity for students to have fun but also connect with the city and surrounding communities.

Student discounts

What makes shopping at the many high street brand stores even more enticing for a student are the discounts.

Every year the annual Student Lock-In Night allows students to purchase products at a significantly discounted price in the city centre. For the event, which usually takes place between October and November, some shops in the high street stay open until 9 pm offering discounts of up to half off. The event is free to attend and usually has live entertainment. Just bring your student ID and your friends.

There are other freebies and discounts available in Canterbury as well.

Touring the cathedral and The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge are not only a great way to spend your free time in between your studies, they are also free for students. If you feel like catching a film, the Odeon and Curzon cinemas both offer student discounts.
