Dip into iconic museums and galleries, shop along charming terraced streets then go out for dinner in the nation’s capital
Play tourist for the day and take in the incredible expanse of The Mall as you walk from the Potomac River, past the Lincoln Memorial and towards the iconic white columns and domed rooftop of the United States Capitol. There are more famous art collections, and museum exhibitions than you could possibly see in a year, let alone a day, but you can write yourself a list and start crossing them off on quiet days when you’re taking a break from the books.
As well as culture, you’ll want to explore the city’s beautiful outdoor spaces with jogs by the Potomac or sailing and canoeing on sunny days. Hike on trails through Rock Creek Park or picnic by a stream in peaceful Glover-Archbold Park. Take walks in the gardens around The White House. Ice skate in front of the National Gallery of Art on an outdoor rink on the Mall.
Take the time to get to know DC’s neighbourhoods. Spend afternoons walking around the terraced streets of Georgetown. Go shopping along M Street or head up Wisconsin Avenue browsing boutiques. Pause for coffee and a cupcake at one of the area’s many cafés like favorite Baked & Wired.
Spend evenings at the city’s theatres seeing world-class performances, dance or live music. Find a favorite intimate club or lounge and see a band or listen to open mic nights at places like Gypsy Sally’s, down by the water in Georgetown. Make a path to hip areas like Adams Morgan to sip cocktails in buzzing bars, or eat out in some of the capital’s best eating spots, like Donburi.
