Where are the HCC campuses located?

Houston Community College or HCC (also knows at the Houston Community College System, HCCS) is a community college system that operates community colleges in Houston, Missouri City, Greater Katy, and Stafford in Texas.

Most of the colleges are located in Houston, the fourth-largest city in the United States. Many of the HCC locations are in the heart of downtown Houston. With a plethora of restaurants, bars, shops, attractions, pockets of green spaces, and hotels, the downtown is considered one of the most vibrant and popular areas in the city.

The downtown area is also the largest business district in Houston as well as the state of Texas. Once just a central business district with a collection of commercial skyscrapers that emptied out at the end of the working day, the downtown area has been revitalised.

It has transformed into a desirable, walkable centre of culture and entertainment that is not only great for working and living, but also for shopping, dining, exploring attractions, and entertainment.

Studying at the Houston Community College System

The Houston Community College System (HCCS) is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to offer associate degrees and certificates in 26 different fields.

The most popular programs include:

  • Liberal Arts and Sciences
  • General Studies and Humanities
  • Business
  • Management
  • Marketing
  • Health Professions

An open-admission, public institution of higher education, HCC provides high-quality, affordable education for the purpose of academic advancement, workforce training, career development, and lifelong learning.

HCC is noted for actively recruiting international students, which make up a large portion of its total enrolment of 69,000 students, so you can expect an international and diverse atmosphere studying there.

HCC student life

At Houston Community College life extends beyond the classroom. HCC not only provides workshops for students to enhance their abilities but also provides plenty to get involved in.

Enjoy fun and exciting on-campus events put on by the university throughout the year. You can also get involved in organisations and various programs that allow you to explore new interests, gain leadership skills, and make new friends.

The Recreation Sports Department (Rec Sports) sponsors programs, services, and facilities that are responsive to the campus community’s physical, social, recreational, and lifelong educational needs including club sports, intramural and extramural sports, unified sports, and esports, as well as fitness, health, and wellness.

Whether you want to get active and show off your skills, or just want to have fun with outdoor adventures and other on/off-campus activities during study breaks, Rec Sports has something in store.

The dynamic nature of the college’s surroundings will also help to enrich your overall student experience.

Main Street bars

At night, Main Street and the downtown area come to life with a diverse bar scene.

You can enjoy Texas-themed saloons such as Boots ‘n Shoots for whiskey shots, get intimate with your friends at the 25-seat Captain Foxheart’s Bad News Bar & Spirit Lodge, play upscale bowling and billiards at Lucky Strikes Lanes, or head to the fashionable spot for jazz and blues, The Nightingale Room.

Noteworthy annual events

Downtown and midtown host some of Houston’s most important annual events, festivals, parades, and celebrations. The two-day Japan Festival, held in April at the Miller Outdoor Theater at Hermann Park, is one of the largest in America.

If you’re into cars, join over 250,000 spectators at the three-day Houston Art Car Parade, where you’ll be able to see 250-plus cars from all over North America.

In the summer, make your way to the Revention Music Center and get electrified at the Houston International Jazz Festival.

Walk through the downtown area with over 200,000 patrons and enjoy high-flying balloons, marching bands, fabulous floats, and Santa Claus at Houston’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, a fixture since 1949.

Houston’s downtown dining scene

When it’s time to eat, you’ll be spoilt for choice, as Houston’s downtown restaurant scene is bursting at the seams with ethnic-inspired cuisine. Choose from eateries like Treebeards, one of the city’s original spots, or Irma’s, a lunchtime hot spot.

History of the Houston Community College System

The Houston Community College System (HCCS) was founded in 1971 by the Houston Independent School District as a result of a public referendum.

The formation of HCCS was inspired by the success of its first community colleges - Houston Junior College (for whites), and Houston College (for African American students). HJC and HCN, which were founded in 1927, both evolved into the University of Houston and Texas Southern University, respectively.

In its early days, HCCS used HISD’s facilities on its school campuses for teaching classes during evenings and weekends. However, in 1989 it separated from HISD and established its own Board of Trustees.

Three years later HCCS restructured into a multi-college system before it began to transfer its operations to community college district-operated campuses throughout the HCCS service area in 1997.
