Cross the Thames river for wide open green spaces, cricket and strong student communities just minutes from the city
Make your student home south of the river in Kennington, Vauxhall or Elephant & Castle and you’ll only be a tube stop or two from central London. Stroll up to the South Bank and dive into the cultural feast on offer with so many of London’s finest galleries, theatres and concert venues cheek by jowl.
Stretch your legs closer to home in Victorian heritage-protected Kennington Park. This charming, historic park has even won awards. Settle in the shade of one of its ancient trees and catch up on your studies or just watch the world go by.
Get a taste of British sporting culture at the nearby Oval cricket ground, the first ground in England to host an international Test match in 1880.
Head towards the more urban Elephant & Castle (also home to Ministry of Sound) to find a thriving student community thanks to all the local accommodation serving LSBU. There’s also a useful shopping centre for picking up essentials.
When you get hungry, there’s a whole spectrum of eating options in Kennington. At one end, community-run, bring-your-own-bottle vegetarian local’s favourite Bonnington Cafe. At the other, critic’s darling Counter, a New York-meets-Paris brasserie and bar that occupies one of the railway arches under the main line out of Waterloo station.
Vauxhall may be well-known for its hardcore clubbing scene but you’ll find much more that thumping bass in the wider Kennington area. Check out some experimental theatre at the Ovalhouse - there’s a café and bar to keep you refreshed as you feed your mind.
