Cool cafés, bustling markets, street food and culture - enjoy the urban village vibe of relaxed but hip Clerkenwell
There’s so much packed in to this buzzing neighbourhood that the best way to explore is on foot. Turn a corner and come across the busy throng of a street market, chance upon an historic square or stumble across a café that’s beckoning you in for brunch and a coffee.
Strolling along the pleasant tree-lined streets, you might hear the sounds of a dance class or see theatre-goers swelling out onto a pavement. Or maybe you’ll just spot an amazing bar or restaurant to store in your memory bank.
This is an area that doesn’t sleep. Turn up early (that means early!) to see the meat traders of ancient Smithfield Market plying their trade, then stop in at a nearby pub to join them relaxing after a night’s work with beer and breakfast.
Take in a pop-up art exhibition and choose from a wealth of international food at bustling Exmouth Market, whose stalls tempt you with delights from burritos to barbecues. Browse trendy boutiques before moving on to marvel at the dazzling shopfronts of diamonds in Hatton Garden.
Admire the flagstone arch of 16th-century St John's Gate then enjoy a flamenco performance at Sadler’s Wells dance theatre, or dine like a king in the contemporary surrounds of a world-class restaurant. If you’re still awake, dance the night away to dub-techno in an edgy club.
A host of universities are located in the area, including City University, UAL and Cass, and many others are easy to get to with several tube stops - Old Street, Barbican, Farringdon and Angel - all nearby.
