Set up home in the eclectic Berlin Mitte neighbourhood, where centuries of history combine with the area’s modern twist
Home to some of the capital’s most recognisable sights, a stroll through Berlin Mitte will feel like stepping into the setting for a tourist’s postcard. Stand in awe before the triumphal arch of Brandenburger Tor, or ride to the top of Berliner Fernsehturm for amazing views of the city. Evidence of Berlin’s history exists around every corner, too. Find yourself moved by the sombre concrete slabs of the Holocaust Memorial, or by the story behind the Cold War border crossing at Checkpoint Charlie.
A melting pot of modern and traditional culture, Berlin Mitte boasts no fewer than five world-famous museums. Within their walls, you can discover treasures ranging from the bust of Nefertiti to Impressionist masterpieces, before indulging in an afternoon shopping spree on Mulackstraße, Berlin’s independent fashion street. Check out the vintage designer labels at Das Neue Schwarz, or off-the-wall streetwear at Starstyling. In the evening, get tickets to a play at famous theatre Berliner Ensemble.
With so much exploring to do, it’s important to take time to refuel. Fortunately, Berlin Mitte is full to the brim with places to do just that. In summer, wander through the sprawling expanse of Tiergarten park to Schleusenkrug, a traditional beer garden serving Bavarian brews and authentic German fare in an idyllic alfresco setting. For something different, go in search of mouthwatering Middle Eastern cuisine at Dada Falafel, followed by drinks and dancing at legendary techno club Tresor.
