St Louis Hills
Live in a tight-knit Italian-American community and make friends with locals as you shop in delis and eat in trattorias
Spend your time as a student in St Louis living in an area steeped with history, and alive with Italian culture. Walk by shop awnings and fire hydrants painted red, green and white, with the aroma of fresh coffee wafting on the breeze. Pop into delis to pick up fresh bread, olives and cheese, or grab a panini on your morning walk as you head off to study at St Louis University or Washington University.
Return to The Hill, climbing above the city, and spend afternoons on café terraces, watching locals buzz about grabbing ingredients for supper. If you don’t want to cook, there are plenty of places to eat out. Pick up a quick bite at a café, buy fresh pasta from delis, share pizza with friends or treat yourself to a meal at award-winning local favourites like Giovanni’s on the Hill.
On Sundays, join local families and head to church, or visit parks to picnic on the grass or play a game of ball - the area’s proud of raising several top baseball and soccer players. Jump on your bike and cycle to galleries, or spend an afternoon at the Missouri Botanical Garden, just a short hop from the Hill area. You can find inner peace in the Japanese Garden, or explore the English Woodland Garden.
Living in The Hill area means you’re close to the jewel in the city’s crown, Forest Park, just west of downtown. Warm up on chilly days in one of the park’s free museums. Wander the corridors of St Louis Art Museum before heading back home feeling inspired and ready to get on with your own studies.
