Universities in Coventry

Home to two major universities, along with a selection of smaller schools and colleges, Coventry really has something for every student.

Coventry University

Based in the heart of the city, Coventry University is one of the UK’s fastest-growing universities. It gained full university status in 1992 and has since gone from strength to strength, with a population today of more than 38,000 students.

Courses span the full range of academic fields, with the university especially well known for engineering, architecture, communications and social care. The campus has some amazing facilities, including research labs, design studios and the lively Students' Union.

There’s a strong emphasis on career skills and practical learning, with many courses including the option to take a year-long placement through the university’s extensive network of local employers.

University of Warwick

Based on the outskirts of Coventry, the University of Warwick offers a different kind of university experience to Coventry University – it has more of a traditional academic focus and a rural campus surrounded by lush countryside.

The university is incredibly prestigious, regularly ranking among the ten best universities in the UK and among the top 100 globally. The quality of teaching is first-rate no matter what you study, but it particularly excels in mathematics, business, English and history.

There’s a big international community at Warwick, with overseas students making up around 40% of the overall population. The campus is packed with facilities (including its own nightclub!), while Coventry is only 15 minutes away by bus.

Looking for private accommodation that’s close to campus? We have a great selection of University of Warwick accommodation!

CU Coventry

An offshoot of Coventry University, CU Coventry (formerly Coventry University College) focuses on vocational and professional courses in fields ranging from business and computing to hospitality and social care.

The campus is ideally placed just a 10-minute walk from the city centre and has lots of excellent facilities. All degree-level programmes are accredited by Coventry University, so after graduating you’ll have a qualification from a highly respected institution.

Things for students to do in Coventry

With great nightlife, cool cultural attractions and a packed calendar of events running throughout the year, Coventry offers plenty in the way of entertainment for students.

Arts & culture

Coventry’s cultural scene is heavily underrated. Herbert Art Gallery & Museum keeps things fresh with rotating exhibitions covering everything from local history to contemporary art, while Coventry Music Museum celebrates the city’s musical heritage.

If theatre is the thing, you’ll love the Belgrade Theatre, which puts on musicals, West End shows, live comedy, drama and more. Warwick Arts Centre on the University of Warwick campus is another excellent venue for all types of performance.

History

Coventry has a fascinating history dating back to the medieval period, preserved today at sites like St. Mary’s Guildhall. With its timber-framed buildings and old-world pubs, Spon Street is another place worth stopping by – especially for a drink!

For more recent history, head to Coventry Transport Museum, which houses the world’s largest collection of British vehicles. The magnificent Coventry Cathedral, which was rebuilt after WWII, is another notable historic landmark.

Food & drink

Coventry has a diverse food scene, reflecting its multicultural population. The city centre has all sorts of options ranging from traditional British fare to authentic Indian, Chinese, Turkish and Caribbean restaurants.

Just outside the city centre, Earlsdon is another foodie hotspot with some great independent eateries. FarGo Village, a creative hub 10 minutes from the city centre, has regular events with delicious street food.

Nightlife

The Students’ Union venues at Coventry University and Warwick host major midweek events that are especially popular with freshers, and there are lots of late-night options in the city centre when you want to venture beyond campus.

Popular student pubs include the Phoenix, the Old Windmill and Sky Blue Tavern, while Kasbah, 147 Nightclub and Catch Twenty Two are perfect for a big night out. For something a bit different, head to Boom Battle Bar.

Outdoors

Coventry has some excellent green spaces that make for the perfect study break. The expansive War Memorial Park is easily accessible from the city centre and serves as Coventry’s main urban park.

Coombe Abbey Country Park is a 20-minute bus journey from the city centre and has beautiful walking trails, a lake and historical ruins to explore. The nearby Warwickshire countryside is another worthy day trip.

Best student areas in Coventry

There are a few key student areas in Coventry, which are split between the lively city centre and the quieter, more residential suburbs.

City centre

With easy access to shops, restaurants and nightlife, as well as Coventry University and CU Coventry campuses, the city centre is an obvious choice for first-year and international students who want to be close to the action.

The area is home to several purpose-built student complexes with modern amenities like gyms, on-site laundry and organised social events. Rents tend to be higher here, but the prime location means you'll save lots on transport costs.

Earlsdon

Based just 15 minutes from the city centre, Earlsdon is a charming suburb popular with second- and third-year students seeking a slower pace of life. It’s known for its independent scene, with lots of small shops, cafes and pubs lined up along Earlsdon Street.

The suburb is ideally placed for University of Warwick students, with direct bus connections reaching campus in 15 minutes. House shares are the most common type of student accommodation and offer excellent value.

Barras Heath

Another option with a more suburban feel, Barras Heath is a newer residential area that’s becoming increasingly popular with students. It’s located roughly two miles northwest of the city centre, so well-placed for Coventry University and CU Coventry.

The area offers a mix of modern housing, both purpose-built student residences and private house shares. Demand generally isn’t as high as in Earlsdon and the city centre, so it’s a great place to look for cheap student accommodation in Coventry.

Coventry cost of living

Coventry is one of the more affordable cities in the UK, particularly for students. Housing costs vary by area and type of accommodation, but typically range from £90–£140 per week — significantly cheaper than major UK cities like London and Manchester.

Living costs also tend to be affordable, and the compact nature of the city means you can get to many places on foot. Overall, you’ll generally be able to live comfortably with a monthly budget of £700–£1,100.

Free things to do in Coventry

When you need your student budget to stretch, Coventry offers plenty of free entertainment. The Blitz Museum is free to enter and packed full of wartime memorabilia, while the Weaver's House is a hidden gem that runs regular open days.

When the weather’s nice, a walking tour of the city’s historic landmarks, including Coventry Cathedral and St. Mary's Guildhall, is always fascinating. The likes of War Memorial Park and Coombe Abbey Country Park are of course free to enjoy too.

Student discounts in Coventry

Many of Coventry’s top cultural attractions offer discounted rates to students, including Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry Transport Museum, Coventry Music Museum and Midland Air Museum.

Platforms like UNiDAYS, Student Beans and TOTUM unlock additional discounts throughout the city, ranging from restaurants and fashion essentials to gym memberships and entertainment.

Public transport in Coventry

Coventry is a fairly compact and walkable city, but when you need to make longer journeys, it’s good to know you have a reliable public transport system at your disposal!

Bus

Primarily operated by National Express Coventry, the bus network is your go-to mode of transport for getting around the city. Services run 10–15 minutes and connect the city centre with university campuses and outlying areas.

If you plan on using the bus regularly, you can grab a student bus pass for unlimited travel across the network for a month or academic term. Another top tip is to download the TfWM app to track buses in real time.

Train

The train is your best bet for venturing beyond Coventry for day trips and weekends away. From the station just outside the city centre, you can reach Birmingham in 20 minutes, London in an hour and Manchester in two hours.

By purchasing a 16-25 Railcard, you can save 1/3 on train fares – it's an investment that quickly pays for itself if you travel by train frequently. Split ticketing apps can also help you save money.
