Abstinence
by dudeman41465, November 12, 2005 12:43 AM

I know that most all of you have probably already been told that, “The only 100% way to not get pregnant is abstinence”, and if you haven't you have now, lol. I know also that you probably don't want to hear another sex ed rant so I'm going to give you some practical reasons coming from the mouth of somebody your age as to why abstinence is the best policy if you are in any way unsure about whether or not you should have sex.

Abstinence can be defined differently by many people, some people think that it means not having sexual intercourse, but I define it as refraining from sexual contact altogether. First let's talk about the most popular reason for abstaining from sex altogether, preventing pregnancy. Sexual contact in any way can lead to pregnancy. Penetration does not have to occur in order for semen to get into the vagina. The male does not have to ejaculate either. Every male produces a small amount of pre-ejaculate fluid that is often referred to as “pre-cum”. This fluid just leaks out on its own when the male is aroused, and contact with any area near the vagina is all that is required for sperm to launch themselves toward the vagina. Pregnancy can occur this way, and while it is much less likely than if you have fully unprotected intercourse, it can still happen.

Sexual contact of any kind can also spread STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) or STIs (sexually transmitted infections), ejaculation is not necessary. Many STDs do not have to have visible symptoms to be spread either. If you have any kind of sexual contact with a person that has contracted a sexually transmitted disease then you are at risk for contracting it as well. It is a germ like any other and your genitals are probably the most sensative external part of your body, not to mention the fact that it is a warm and moist environment. Abstaining from sexual activity will protect you from this danger, and it will protect your future spouse from contracting any STDs from you that you could have picked up by not being abstinent.

Abstinence is very important to the moral values of many people. If you remain abstinent until you are married then you will not have to be the one to look your partner in the face and admit to having sex with people before you met. It is very hard for some couples to come to terms with things like knowing that their one true love was intimate with somebody before them. It has been shown in studies that couples who have remained abstinent when they get married tend to have a lower divorce rate than couples who had previous partners (click here for more info). Abstinence also complies with most religious beliefs, and it prevents the people who follow it of some stress that could come from disobeying your own moral rules to the worry of getting caught by your parents.

Abstinence is not for everybody though. If you are careful in choosing your partners and make sure to use some form of birth control, then a healthy sex life can actually make you a happier person. Barrier methods of birth control such as condoms are recommended as they are the only ones that can protect you from STDs, but even they are not always 100% effective in accomplishing this. Sex is a known stress reducer and healthy exercise. Also by having a healthy sex life you can be assured that your sex life after you get married will be healthy and fulfilling assuming that you and your partner can come to terms with the fact that one or both of you had previous partners, rather than hoping it will be so when you marry somebody you have never made love to before. I hope that I have managed to inform you enough to make your own decision on whether or not you will remain abstinent. Either way has its own benefits, and it is up to you to take the facts and apply them to your situation(s) and make your own decision on whether you should remain abstinent or not.
