Return to Index A Straight View of Homosexuality by smartassman, November 9, 2005 9:24 PM
As I look at this world, I see nothing but two-sided debates on the subject of homosexuality. People either like gays or they don't. More often than not, it's the gays who like gays and the straights who don't. Aside from my parents, I got my first glimpse at the world of straight-gay debate when I saw on television one day a group of people holding a Christian ralley. They were holding up signs like "GOD HATES FAGS!" or "FAGS WILL BURN IN HELL!" This disgusts me. The Bible speaks of tolerance and acceptance, so why can't these people, who claim to be God's men through and through, hold such hatred and intolerance to people who were different? It should come without saying now, that I'm straight. The next outside-of-family experience I had with gays that contributed to this article was when I was watching the 700 Club. They had a gay man on the show who was telling the producers "I know being gay is a sin, but I can't help it! I pray to God every day to take the homosexuality away from me, and it never happens!" I always thought homosexuality was uncontrollable. After all, straights can't just off and be gay, so how come religious cults (that's right. I called them "cults") assume that gays can choose to be straight? That, however, proved my point. Then came the 2004 Presidential Election. It was George W. Bush seeking a second term against John Kerry. Until just before the election, I supported Bush in everything because, as shocking as it may seem, my parents were saying nothing but good things about him. However, I figured I would take a look at JohnKerry.com and see what his plan was, since he said he had a plan for America that could be seen on his website. I didn't look at his article on gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transsexuals, though, but everything else seemed rational. Then I told my mother that his plan seemed quite feasable. She said "Well, there's certain things Kerry is for that I object to. He's for gay marriage; he's for abortion..." That was the last straw. My mother has always been a devout Christian, and yet she automatically believes what the religious cults tell her and doesn't even bother to ask God what is right? It was then that my acceptance of gays came out. The only place we get our antihomosexuality attitude is from the Bible, and while the Bible does speak of homosexuality being a sin, it also speaks of morals such as tolerance and acceptance. It also speaks of not judging people, so even if it is a sin to be gay, that law was put in the Bible for God to enforce, not us. Besides, the descrimination that gays receive in this country is in direct conflict with American ideals. Take for example the Declaration of Independance. In it you will find the phrase "We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal, that they are bestowed upon by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness..." How do you expect gays to live happily and with liberty the way we straights are treating them? The religious cults like "GOD HATES FAGS!" has driven me away from the church, but not from God. I believe that God is willing to accept and tolerate just the same as he wants us to. I still read the Bible and pray to God, but I will never go to church again. I believe the church is wrong, not God, and not gays.
