Hepatitis

Hepatitis comes in 5 main groups A,B,C,D,E. while not all groups are obtained via an STD, most are so that is why Hepatitis is listed as an STD. each group has its own unique method of causing an infection and all are caused by a different virus.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is caused by infected food or drinking water that is contaminated with a virus called HAV. HAV can also be spread by anal/oral sex (rimming, giving him head after anal sex). Although it causes the liver to swell it is not long lasting and almost everyone has a full recovery

Hepatitis b

HBV is the virus that causes Hepatitis B and is spread via the exchange of bodily fluids with an infected person; this highly contagious virus is the most common form of Hepatitis STD. Spread by the following:

  • Unprotected sex with an infected person.
  • Needle Sharing with an infected drug user (heroin, cocaine, vitamins or steroids).
  • Tattoo or body piercing with (unsterile tools use on an infected person).
  • Health care workers can get hepatitis B by accidently pricking themselves with a needle.
  • Sharing a toothbrush, razor, or other personal items with an infected person.
  • Pregnant woman can infect their baby with hepatitis B at birth or through breastfeeding.
  • Being bitten by an infected person.

Hepatitis B can cause serious liver damage, which may lead to cancer; it can be a lifelong infection too.

Hepatitis c

Caused by HCV Hepatitis C is much like Hepatitis B in the way it spreads and damages the liver Hepatitis C can become chronic and lead to cirrhosis (scarring of the liver)

Hepatitis d

Hepatitis D is spread the same way as HBV but you can only be infected with HDV if you are already infected with HBV, causes swelling of the liver.

Hepatitis e

Hepatitis E is caused by the virus HEV. Spread via contaminated drinking water infected with the virus. This type this type is rare in the west. It causes swelling of the liver, no long term damage. It can also spread by anal/oral sex (rimming, giving him head after anal sex).

Symptoms if present are:

  • Mild fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Tiredness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea

Later signs of hepatitis:

  • Dark-colour urine and pale bowel movements
  • Pain in the stomach
  • Skin and whites of the eyes turning yellow

Protection from infection

Type A and B have a vaccine, for type B, C, D for sexual contact using a condom or femidom helps. Type B, C, can be treated with drugs. No treatment for types A, D, E though type A has a vaccine for preventing infection.
