Syphilis

Syphilis is a common STD caused by bacteria called Treponema pallidum. The symptoms of Syphilis can be difficult to spot because they are almost indistinguishable from other diseases. Syphilis is transmitted via direct contact with syphilis sore, the sores clear up after about 6 weeks but you can still infect others with syphilis. A single dose of penicillin is all that is needed to cure Syphilis unless you have had it for more than a year, and then you might have to have more doses of it.

Syphilis stages

Primary stage

The primary stage of Syphilis is the time of infection, an open sore, creator like will form and is highly infectious if others make contact with it. This stage can take between 10 days and 3 months to appear, but mostly around 21 days is when the sore starts to appear. This tends to clear up after about six weeks. The sore mostly appears at the point of infection, but can appear anywhere on the body. You cannot get Syphilis from a toilet seat, door handle, remote control, or anything else, it has to be direct contact.

Secondary Stage

Secondary Stage Syphilis starts when a rash appears on the body, this rash if it appears on the soles of the feet or palms of the hands makes syphilis almost a sure sign of its infection as no other medical condition has a rash that would affect those two places. The rash can be so faint it might go unnoticed, it can look like something else that makes people think It's something else and they are safe, it can come and go over time, without any itching people tend to ignore it and when it passes they carry on with normal life as if nothing is wrong. Other symptoms of this stage can be headaches, hair loss, fatigue, fever, weight loss, swollen glands, and sore throat. But the worse is yet to come. Even at this stage you can easily infect others.

The latent stage

The latent stage of Syphilis is the deadly stage if still untreated, because this stage shows no symptoms people tend to think it's gone away and forget the warning they had from the other two stages. They still have Syphilis and though you no longer see anything on your body, be assured that it is going to work inside your body. This can start to break down you joints, brain, eye's, liver, blood vessels and any other internal organs, this might take years to happen and might show up in the last stage of syphilis.

Last stage of syphilis

The last stage of syphilis causes paralysis, numbness, gradual blindness and dementia, it also makes co-ordination difficult, and this stage can lead to death.

Syphilis and pregnancy

Syphilis infected pregnant women always infect their unborn baby, depending how long she has syphilis for would mean the difference between a still born baby, or a baby that dies soon after birth, if the baby lives and is untreated , then he/she might have seizures developmental problems or die.

Protection from Syphilis is not that good as the sores can be almost anywhere on the body, a condom offers a little protection but not much, scuba gear would be your best bet with flippers and snorkel to offer the best protection from infection.
