** About the "R.I.P"**
A two-vehicle crash Wednesday at the intersection of Business Interstate 20 and South County Road 1264 took the life of 16-year-old Midland High School junior Kiara Graves.
"Kiara was a wonderful student and was in the top ten percent of her class. She was well loved by many of her fellow students," said Betty Newman, Midland Independent School District counseling director.
Charles Roseberry, a classmate and long-time friend of Graves, said she was a serious student who already had been accepted to several colleges and she enjoyed dancing and listening to music.
"She was smart and a really good person," Roseberry said. "She was always happy, didn't really let anything get to her. She always kept a smile on her face."
Graves died after an accident that happened at about 11:30 a.m. near mile marker 314 on Business Interstate 20, close to the Airline Mobile Home Park
She was driving alone in a four-door silver Hyundai, traveling south on South County Road 1246 and apparently failed to yield right of way at the stop sign intersection with Business 20, Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Carols Salgado said.
When the Hyundai entered the intersection it was "T-boned" by a four door Ford F-250 truck that struck the Huyndai's passenger side, compressing much of the car's passenger compartment and pushing the vehicle about 25 yards into the highway median.
Midland firefighters used the jaws of life to remove Graves from the wreckage. She was pronounced dead soon afterward at Midland Memorial Hospital.
Graves had left campus to attend a doctor's appointment in Odessa, MISD Superintendent Robert Nicks said.
"It's just tragic for the family and for the many teachers and students and administrators at the school. My heart goes out to them." he said.
MISD school board Vice-President Linda Foster said she never will forget losing a friend in a car accident when she was in high school and she was heartbroken by the news of Graves' death.
"As a mother, as a school board member, as somebody in this community, I am just heart sickened. And I am so sorry and my prayers are with the family."
Newman said counselors met with students Wednesday afternoon after news of the accident reached Midland High School. She said more counselors would be present today for anyone wanting to discuss the accident.
"In addition to the four counselors who work (at Midland High School) we plan to have four more counselors there and we have others waiting."
Many of MISD's counselors have received critical incident stress management training and several of those counselors will be available for students to speak with, Newman said.
"When you don't express your emotions, when you just keep those bottled up, eventually they'll come out," Newman said, explaining why she believes it is important for students to discuss Graves' death. Emotions will either come out in a behavior, come out in depression or bad grades -- there will be a reaction down the road, because you just can't hide your feelings, especially with something as tragic as this."
The driver and only passenger of the truck that collided with Graves was taken to Midland Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. His name was not known.
