They don't feel safe (especially not after 9/11) and instead of turning it against themselves and finding out why they don't feel safe they turn it against other people that are slightly different. A lot of prejudice could be prevented if people understood other cultures and sentimentalities. It also helps to be open-minded and think "our way is not necessarily the best way"...
