I grew up and lived in Utah for the first 21 years of my life, but I've always loved California, and 2 years ago I finally moved out here. Now everyone back at home is jealous. Ha, you won't get shot! That reminds me of when I was in elementary school and I thought I was going to get stabbed or something before passing high school (this based on my watching of too much tv), but nothing even close ever happened. Every urban area has its rough zones, and whether they are in California or elsewhere, you should be just fine if you avoid them. The real deterrent for living in California is the population, if it matters to you. As the most populous state in the U.S. with approximately 37 million people, it is home to about 50% more people than the next closest state, Texas. The freeways can be a nightmare at times, and there are a lot of areas which have a very high cost of living. Depending on your line of work you may end up doing a lot of commuting, but maybe not. It all depends on exactly where you end up and your own specific scenario. Some people hate howcrowded California is. I personally enjoy the diversity (as contrasted to Utah where a very large majority of the people are white mormons and there is hardly any diversity to be found). California is a beautiful place, and the weather is great, espeically in Southern California, if you hate the cold like I do. Also, if you are living near LA or San Francisco, you are definitely going to be in the centers of civilization with access to pretty much whatever entertainment, wares, or other services you want.  Savvyanna: People say that about everywhere though, including the estate which I live one...  amor102: It's not that bad.
