As an openly gay student paramedic, and first and foremost a public service here in the UK, I feel its important to show you that the world is changing for the better, though I'm not sure my job is the right one to use. But hey! It's a fun way to do it.
Today was a fairly normal day, except for one thing: today I let my station know I'm gay. After working at that station for a fair while now, familiarizing myself with the staff, I felt it time to let them know a little bit about me.
It was about half past 10 GMT, and we had just sat down in the duty room with a nice mug of tea (hot chocolate for me) to discuss the usual station issues such as the days fire warden, vehicles out of action for various reasons, and the inevitable notice about remembering to turn the diesel pump off after filling up the tanks on the ambulances. After about 5 minutes I slowly turned the conversation to wives and girlfriends. Showing a curious nature to become very much a part of the station community, I asked about meetings, exes, the best ones, etc.; all typical stuff a normal guy would talk about until the questions turned to me. Until now I hadn't actually hinted that I was gay, though I was very careful not to lie to the station. Using phrases like "other half" meant that I could get away without disclosing the gender of my partners. But this time I wanted them to know. So taking a deep breath, I recounted the tale of David (my ex). Each listened intently to what I said, most often asking questions like... how long have I known? What prompted me to come out...? How good does their uniform make them look...? All asked with good intent, laughing about all the times they had unwittingly made gay jokes without being aware there was one on station at the time. To be honest it didn't bother me what they joked about. I was proud of what I had just done and who I am.
The rest of the day was the usual hectic rushing around that you get with the emergency services. Numerous stand downs from control from three different people re-alerting us to an over turned car in a ditch (a remnant of an accident a few days past).
Finally at the end of shift, whilst washing down the ambulance ready for the next crew to "take her out to tea," the senior station commander came and had a chat with me, even picking up a brush himself to help with the cleaning. We talked about home, my parents, university and everything that has been going on with Obama and his policy reforms. It was nerve racking to speak to such a high ranking professional but I was pleased he took the effort to speak to a "trainee" above the other paramedics on station.
