The Modern Vegetarian: An Easy Way to Go Greenposted February 2, 2009 12:02 PM by Josh97816I know there are assumptions made about me from the get-go. I'm a member of PETA, my closet is full of hemp, and I probably have sported dreads sometime in my life. The first thing you should know is that Vegetarians are not made from a mold; we are a varied group of people. We also do not belong to some sort of veggie loving cult. (At least I don't! Although, I do love veggies!)
I am one of over 7.3 million Americans that do not eat meat. I probably need to say that I don't eat fish either. To be really specific I am a lacto-ovo-vegetarian; which means that unlike my vegan brethren, I do eat eggs and dairy.
People become vegetarian for reasons varying from religion to animal cruelty. I am a vegetarian for the same reason that you turn off the faucet when you brush your teeth, or recycle your soda cans. I want to lessen the economic and environmental impact that my everyday routine has on our planet.
In 2006, a UN initiative found that "the livestock industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation worldwide, and modern practices of raising animals for food contributes on a massive scale to air and water pollution, land degradation, climate change, and loss of biodiversity." The cattle industry is also a huge drain on our country's economy and resources. Ecologists have expanded and detailed the food chain in trophic dynamics. They basically show the position of an organism on the food chain and describe the resources that it consumes. According to the theory, "it requires ten times as many crops to feed animals being bred for meat production as it would to fed the same number of people on a vegetarian diet."
Considering our current economic crisis, feeding as many people on as few resources as possible is sensible. I know that I sound idealistic but remember we are currently 7.3 million strong. That's approximately 22 million meat-free meals a day! Think about the dent that we could potentially cause in hunger.
Many worry that the vegetarian lifestyle will lead to malnourishment. However, there is a plethora of health benefits that can be attributed to vegetarianism. The American Dietitian Association has stated that vegetarians "tend to have lower body mass index, lower levels of cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and less incidence of heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, dementia such as Alzheimer's disease and other disorders." The benefits of a well-rounded vegetarian diet are clear, which makes it unsurprising that some American families choose to incorporate vegetarian meals into their diets at least once a week. It is purely a belief that meat is a necessary part of our everyday lives.
The world is becoming more aware of how serious our decisions affect the environment. Many businesses are becoming more eco-friendly and even cars have begun to move towards using sustainable energy. If we want to preserve our world we need to examine our current status and makes changes. We need to use our Earth wisely. And while becoming a lacto-ovo-vegetarian or a vegan is extreme for many we need to start using our resources more efficiently. So lets stop relying so heavily on the meat industry and invest a little more in agriculture. What better way to "go green" than to eat greener? CommentsLeave a Comment

Firstly, plants lack a central nervous system and in turn can not feel. Animals feel... I doubt you would eat your pet cat. So why eat a cow?
And a lot of times the actual product that we eat is a byproduct of the plant (e.g. fruit and vegetables). The plant gives them up freely and without harm to itself.
Next, I'm not really an animal rights activist. The point of my article was to say that vegetarianism, or a diet with more of an agricultural focus, is more economically sound than a diet of meat.
Yes, the Native Americans did use meat more efficiently and I would be all for America modeling their food industry after theirs!
Again, Thanks for sharing your point of view!
Although, I am proud to say that I don't eat cows. ^_^
Once I move out, I'll be able to go the way I want to. ^_^
I do think that it is good that some people do eat red meat. I mean, if they aren't eaten, there would be an over population. Then, we'd be over run by hoards of animals.
Just to throw this out there, if you really think about ot, you really shouldn't eat plants either for they are living beathing creatures too. They may not be able to cry out in pain or speak, they they live and they breathe too. Shouldn't people stop eating those too? (Even though they taste sooooo good when you make them the right way or even when they are raw.)
I think, that it would be okay for people to eat meat if they killed them humanely and ate EVERYTHING. Like the Native Americans did. They ate every part of the animal, use their pelts and skins for blankets and clothes. They didn't do it for fashion or for what looked good to them. I would be nice to go back to those days..
Yes, I am an animal rights activist. I am with the ASPCA. I would be a part of PETA, if they didn't photoshop their images or if their page didn't give me a virus when I went to their site. >~<
Like you said about the malnourishment, I think that if people really researched on how to eat healthy by not eating meat, they wouldn't worry about tha kind of thing. Before I went veggie, I researched what I needed to eat and what I needed to take to make sure that I didn't get malnourished or get kidney stones.
A plus side to going veggie; You lose weight in a GOOD, easy, SAFE way. I was around 129-132 lb when I started, and now a tetter around 119,120,121,122, and 123; That's depending on what else I've been eating.
Going veggie also makes your ammune system so much stronger!! Since I've been vegetarian, I haven't gotten sick once! It's really great. No flus, coughs, runny noses. None of that.
--I've tried Soymilk for the first time last week, it isn't as bad as everyone says. Maybe because I got the chocolate flavored? Just make sure you haven't had anything sweet for about an hour or so cause if you have, the soymilk would taste off. It would taste good, but like it was missing something. Like the chocolate was lacking more flavor.
